Memòria obligatòria
Segons la ‘Vida’ escrita per Sant Atanasi, de jove, un cop morts els seus pares, es va prendre tan seriosament aquelles paraules de Jesús: ‘Si vols ser perfecte, vés, ven tot el que tens i dóna-ho als pobres, i tindràs un tresor al cel. Després vine i segueix-me’ (Mt 19,21b) que es retirà, tot sol, al desert d’Egipte durant més de vint anys (segle III). Però no es va pas desentendre dels problemes del món: mantingué contactes amb l’Església d’Alexandria, la seva ciutat, i encoratjava tots els qui li demanaven consell; molts l’anomenaven ‘Pare’ (‘Abat’), mentre omplien el desert de monestirs.
