Nascut a Toledo (607), va rebre una brillant formació, i essent abat del monestir d’Agalí (Toledo) i bisbe de Toledo (657), esmerçà els seus esforços a acostar la Bíblia i la doctrina de la tradició patrística al poble: ‘Aquell qui es lliura de ple a meditar l’Escriptura, escorcolla la saviesa dels seus predecessors i estudia les profecies, examina les explicacions d’autors famosos i penetra per paràboles complexes el misteri de proverbis i enigmes. Molts lloaran la seva intel·ligència, i la seva fama viurà per generacions’.
