Nacido en Toledo (607), recibió una brillante formación, y siendo abad del monasterio de Agalí (Toledo) y obispo de Toledo (657), empleó sus esfuerzos en acercar la Biblia y la doctrina de la tradición patrística al pueblo: ‘El que se entrega de lleno a meditar la Escritura, indaga la sabiduría de sus predecesores y estudia las profecías, examina las explicaciones de autores famosos y penetra por parábolas intrincadas el misterio de proverbios y enigmas. Muchos alabarán su inteligencia, y su fama vivirá por generaciones’.
