En julio de 2005 el cardenal Christoph Sch\u00f6nborn, arzobispo de Viena, public\u00f3 en el New York Times un art\u00edculo en defensa de la teor\u00eda del dise\u00f1o inteligente que desencaden\u00f3 un debate de alcance mundial. El papa Benedicto XVI encarg\u00f3 entonces al cardenal que abordara con mayor detalle la pugna existente entre creacionismo y evolucionismo, y asimismo solicit\u00f3 a su c\u00edrculo de antiguos alumnos, que se re\u00fane anualmente, que debatiera acerca de esta misma cuesti\u00f3n.
